Founded by Alice Waters, this is the storied birthplace of California Cuisine. Even President Clinton has eaten here. Reserve a month ahead for an exceptional prix fixe dinner, or dine (lunch and dinner) in the more modest cafe. Expensive.
Skates on the Bay

Next to the Berkeley Pier, dine over the water with spectacular views of San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay; exhilarating marina walks nearby. Moderate to expensive.
Lalime's

A fine restaurant serving rustic Mediterranean cuisine in the small, pleasant Gilman Street shopping area. Daily prix fixe option. Moderate to expensive.

Faculty Club
Open to the public, the Faculty Club serves three meals a day on weekdays. The salad bar is especially worthwhile, and there's a pleasant pub. A great place to watch -- what else? -- faculty.
Jimmy Bean's Fifo Cafe
Tasty meals weekdays at the impressive new Haas School of Business.
International House Cafe
Open every day until midnight at historic "I" House, enjoy bay views from the glassed-in patio. You can also eat in the I House cafeteria.
Cafe Grace
Located in the Berkeley Art Museum, this elegant, indoor/outdoor cafe is open 11-4, Tuesday-Sunday.

Musical Offering, 2430 Bancroft, combination cafe/classical CD store.
Cafe Olam, 2736 Bancroft at Berkeley Hillel, delicious kosher food, closed in the summer.
