Honor Societies
Quick Reference: Academic Information

Berkeley has a number of honor societies that elect students in recognition of academic excellence. Among the national societies are Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, Golden Key, and Order of Omega. The Prytanean Society, founded in 1901, honors upper division and graduate women for academic accomplishment and service to the university. The Honor Students’ Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars recognize and celebrate high achievement among first- and second-year students. They provide a wide array of community service experiences, as well as opportunities for personal growth and leadership development. There are also national and campus honor societies related to specific academic disciplines.
