Quick Reference: Academic Information The library at UC Berkeley contains one of the finest research collections in the country. It consists of Doe, Bancroft, and Moffitt libraries, in addition to 20 specialized libraries serving a variety of academic disciplines. The library’s collections and services are complemented by a variety of affiliated libraries and departmental reading rooms. The holdings of the library system include over 10 million books and volumes, as well as thousands of serial publications, microfilm items, maps, sound recordings, videos, and government documents. The Doe Library Information Center provides access to library collections and resources, including computer workstations; printed, noncirculating reference sources; and experienced staff to assist with research and the use of reference works. The Morrison Room, located on the first floor of Doe, is a cozy haven for recreational reading and listening to music. The Gardner Stacks, a four-story underground addition connecting Doe and Moffitt libraries, houses the humanities and social science research collections. The stacks contain space for nearly two million volumes. The Bancroft Library, with its entrance facing the Campanile, is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of manuscripts, rare books, and special collections in the United States. The Bancroft hosts changing public exhibits of its treasured collections. Also part of the Bancroft, the University Archives house the official historical records of the University of California system, including those of the Berkeley campus. Note: The Bancroft Library is undergoing a major construction project and is expected to reopen in fall 2008. The project includes a complete state-mandated seismic retrofit of the Doe Annex (the building that houses the Bancroft), along with significant programmatic improvements to the library.
