Sport Clubs attract about 800 students, roughly 200 of them to ballroom dancing alone. Men's ice hockey, which plays late-night games at the Iceland rink in Berkeley, attracts up to 1,000 spectators.

Sport clubs offer a combination of competition, instruction, and recreation. The level of competition varies from club to club. Some compete against varsity teams at NCAA Division I, II, and III schools; others offer only instruction and recreation.

Cal's sport clubs have produced a number of national championship teams, including men's volleyball and men's ultimate Frisbee.

Women's water polo, originally a sport club, graduated to varsity status two years ago, ranking second in the nation in its first year as an intercollegiate sport. Women's lacrosse, currently a club sport, may become a varsity sport next year.

At the same time, some sport clubs, like boxing, fencing, lightweight crew, badminton, and men's volleyball, used to be varsity sports.

Sport clubs have existed at Cal since 1889. The Boxing Club was formed in 1917 and the Sailing Team in 1922. They continue to this day.

Other sport clubs include cycling, men's field hockey, gymnastics, men's lacrosse, racquetball, skiing, handball, women's soccer, synchronized swimming, men's tennis, triathlon, ultimate Frisbee, and waterskiing.

There are also varsity programs in men's and women's gymnastics, women's soccer, and men's tennis.

Membership in sport clubs is open to UC Berkeley students, faculty, staff, and Cal Rec Club members.
