Outstanding achievements: Chemical Engineering Departmental Citation; advanced work in catalyst research for both Berkeley and Tsinghua University laboratories; speaks five languages; in high school, chosen Belgian National Laureate for chemistry.
Immediate plans: Will continue to work in China for a year before returning to the States for a joint M.B.A. and Ph.D. in engineering.

Hometown: Oakland, Calif.
Outstanding achievements: Honors thesis on the persistence of 19th-century Oriental stereotypes in contemporary historical archaeology sheds new light on the experience of Asian immigrants. Has volunteered for several hours a week for multiple community institutions.
Immediate plans: Will pursue Ph.D. in UCLA's interdisciplinary archaeology program.

Outstanding achievements: Internships with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the Oakland-based environmental law firm Earthjustice; member of Mock Trial Team; volunteered with WonderWorks for Kids.
Immediate plans: Will pursue a joint degree with Yale University's School of Forestry and environmental studies.

Outstanding achievements: Finalist for Rhodes Scholarship; won Robert Gordon and Ida W. Sproul Scholarship (awarded to Berkeley's top junior male and female students); as director of Democratic Education at Cal (DeCal), completely overhauled this student-run educational program; founded Origin Lecture Series; created and taught mathematical modeling course for department.
Immediate plans: Will work for San Francisco office of Bain & Company, a consulting firm; may go back to school to study education.

 

David Sontag

Hometown: Piscataway, NJ
Outstanding achievements: Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Departmental Citation, president of the computer science honors society, advanced research in computer science theory; as a teenager, represented international youth group Nation1 and consulted for major technology companies.
Immediate plans: Will pursue Ph.D. in computer science or computational biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
