Cal police aid region with specialized skills, equipment, and a robot

Berkeley has a full-service police department, and then some: UCPD’s capabilities serve the entire Bay Area. As an example, this bomb-squad robot was on display at Parents Weekend this fall. Remotely operated within 1,500 feet, the robot maneuvers like an all-terrain vehicle, negotiating steps and other obstacles. Freshman Ethan Andrianos takes a close look as Officers (from left) Tim Zuniga, Allison Jacobs, and Wade MacAdam demonstrate the robot’s versatility. UCPD’s bomb squad includes six nationally-accredited bomb technicians.
