Registration and Enrollment

Berkeley's enormous buffet table of academic options can be both exhilarating and daunting for students. The overview below will help you and your student understand the process of enrolling in classes.

Tele-BEARS

Registration at UC Berkeley is conducted via the Internet through a system called Tele-BEARS (student I.D. required).

To ensure the fairest possible access to courses, Tele-BEARS enrollment takes place over two phases plus an adjustment period. In Phase I, starting toward the end of the previous semester, students may enroll in a maximum of 10 units, plus one physical education activity course.

In Phase II, starting immediately after Phase I, students complete their course enrollment, totaling units up to the maximum allowed by their college or school. They may then add and drop courses during the adjustment period, which starts one week before instruction and extends through the first weeks of classes, depending on the student's school or college.

To access Tele-BEARS, students are assigned appointments during each phase. They must use their student I.D. number and the personal identification number (PIN) that they are assigned to use the system.

Step-by-Step Enrollment

To enroll and register through Tele-BEARS, follow these steps:

1) Make a Tele-BEARS Appointment

Tele-BEARS appointments for Phases I and II are available to students online (student I.D. required). The Office of the Registrar will notify every student by e-mail when the appointments are available. Appointments for continuing and readmitted students are usually available in mid-March for the fall semester and mid-October for the spring semester. Appointments for new students are usually available in mid-May for the fall semester and late October for the spring semester.

If students need academic advising, they are required to obtain an adviser code (AC), which must be entered when they first access Tele-BEARS each semester. Details on obtaining an adviser code are available from the Registrar.

2) Enroll in Classes

Using the General Catalog and Schedule of Classes, students can plan a class schedule. New students are encouraged to attend the Cal Student Orientation (CalSO) program to obtain an adviser code and get help choosing classes and planning a program of study. Once they have selected their classes, they're ready to use Tele-BEARS to enroll.

3) Pay Registration Fees

Billing and payment for all student fees and campus charges are now online only. Find out how the e-Bill and e-Check system works or learn more details. Fees may be paid in full or in five installments on the Deferred Payment Plan. Fee payment (either in full or the first installment) is due on August 15 for the fall semester and January 15 for the spring semester.

The Deferred Payment Plan

Students can choose to pay registration fees in five installments; a nonrefundable processing fee will be charged to the first installment. Full information about the Deferred Payment Plan is available from Billing and Payment Services on the web or by phone, 510/642-3190.
