CalParents Volunteer Newsletter
March 2016

Greetings from the Cal Parents Office!

Thanks to all who have signed up to help this spring with one or more of the volunteer opportunities outlined below. If you haven’t yet chosen a way to participate, please let us know how you would like to become involved and connect with other Cal families. And, if you have not yet made a gift to Cal this year, a reminder to please consider a gift to the Cal Parents Fund, or to another area of campus. Your support helps Berkeley provide a world class undergraduate experience to all Berkeley students. Thank you!

In Conversation with Chancellor Dirks: A Live Q&A for Alumni and Parents

Dirks

At 6 p.m. PT on March 14th, UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks will host a live 45-minute webcast for alumni and parents of undergraduates. Chancellor Dirks will address questions submitted in advance from these constituencies, as well as outline new developments in the area of undergraduate education at Berkeley, including major pushes in data science and in the arts. The Chancellor will also discuss plans to address the university’s financial needs and how it will continue to fulfill its public mission in an era of reduced state support.

This is a free online event. Registration is required to receive the YouTube Livestream URL.

On February 23, Cal Parents hosted an online chat with Joseph Greenwell, Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students, who responded to a variety of questions posed by parents of Berkeley students. A recording of his conversation with parents is saved here.

Volunteers are needed in the morning  to assist at the Chancellor's Welcome to New Students and throughout the day to staff the Cal Parents information tent. Cal Day is a fantastic day to be on campus and experience the magic of Berkeley.

Cal Day Private High School session

Did your Cal Bear attend a private high school? Interested in sharing your experience with newly admitted students from private high schools and their families?  Volunteers are needed to welcome those attending a special Cal Day informational session for private high school families. The aim of the event is to encourage prospective students and their parents to choose to attend Berkeley, and assure them there are resources available to help with the transition.  For more information or to sign up, please contact Colleen Cahill, Assistant Director for Parent Philanthropy & Engagement. Space is very limited for this opportunity.

Spring Parent-to-Parent Fundraising Campaign

Help raise funds and thank donors to Cal!  Volunteers are needed to contact 8-10 families in your city or region and encourage a leadership gift to the university, and to also thank those who have contributed this year, during the six-week campaign in April and May.  Plenty of training and staff support will be provided. For more information or to sign up, please contact Colleen Cahill, Assistant Director for Parent Philanthropy & Engagement.

Upcoming dates to remember:

Thank you for your support and participation. We will follow up directly in the coming weeks regarding the activities for which you have volunteered to help. We are grateful for your continued commitment and enthusiasm for Berkeley!
