Greetings from the Cal Parents Office!
Cheers to the more than 50 new Berkeley parents who have signed up since May to be Cal Parents Ambassadors! We look forward to having your students on campus, and engaging with you in fun and meaningful ways over the next four years. We sense your enthusiasm and share your excitement! In the coming months, we will be following up with more detailed information about the Cal Parents Ambassador program. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact Rose Hsu.
Welcome Calls to New Cal Families - Volunteers Needed Early August!
Share your love and personal knowledge of Berkeley with the parents of the Class of 2020 by making personal calls to incoming families between August 1 - 15. We are especially in need of volunteers who can speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish or Korean. Besides English, these are the top four primary languages spoken in the households of our incoming class. Although this volunteer role is typically reserved for continuing parents, if you are an alum, a second-time Cal parent, or a new parent outside of California wanting to connect with others in your regional area, we welcome your participation.
To find out more about Welcome Calls, sign up here. If you replied to our call for volunteers after the May newsletter, you do not need to sign up again. Thank you for stepping up early: Tamara Bland; Anupama Donthi; Gloria Hayat; Nancy Hughes; Christine MacDonald; Anne McMullin; Sue Morera; Melisse Mossy; Lucia Tedesco; Yume Yamaguchi; and Ming Zhou.
Move-In Weekend August 20-21 - Volunteers Needed!
Want to be the first to meet and greet the families of the Class of 2020? We are looking for volunteers to staff Cal Parents informational tables for the two Move-In days of August 20-21. You will help distribute the new Cal Parents Resource Guide, provide campus directions, answer general questions, and socialize with incoming parents during the Parents’ Social Hour from 4:00 – 5:00 pm on Saturday, August 20, at Freehouse on Bancroft Way. Volunteers are needed for AM and PM shifts each of the two days, August 20 and 21. To sign up, please contact Rose Hsu.
Volunteer Spotlight - Debbie Oppenheim!
Scott, Jaci, and Debbie Oppenheim
In 2011 Debbie Oppenheim, Cal Parent of then freshman Jacklyn, volunteered to be a caller for the Cal Parents Spring Parent-to-Parent Fundraising Campaign. The Cal Parents team quickly realized what an outstanding Ambassador we had in Debbie, and the following year asked Debbie to become the Calling Campaign Captain.
After five years serving as captain—in addition to making new family welcome calls, campaign thank you calls, mentoring other callers and a Cal student—Debbie has earned a well-deserved break!
This year Debbie is stepping down from her role as the Calling Campaign Captain, but rest-assured, she is not leaving us! She will still be an involved Cal Parents Ambassador and parent-to-parent fundraiser spreading the word about the importance of parent philanthropy at Cal.
Debbie, you are an incredible caller, leader, volunteer mentor and Cal Parent! Thank you from all of us at Cal Parents for your years of outstanding service as a Cal Parents Ambassador. We look forward to continuing to work with you in the future. GO BEARS!
Calling Campaign Success!
Shout-out to our dedicated parent callers for another successful Cal Parents Calling Campaign. Together you raised $292,551 dollars for the 2016 fiscal year!
Thank you for showing Cal students and faculty that they can count on the Berkeley community amid diminished state support. The Cal Parents team is privileged to work with such committed volunteers.
Stay tuned for information next month on volunteering for the Fall Calling Campaign!
Senior Class Delivers
Lesley Chiang and Alyssa Block
At commencement last month, the Senior Class of 2016 presented a check for $65,830 to Chancellor Dirks. Since that day, Berkeley’s newest members of the Cal alumni family have continued to donate generously. The combined Senior Class gift now totals more than $90,000! Kudos to the 1,400-plus members who showed they value their Berkeley experience and want to give back to Cal. During his commencement address, Chancellor Dirks asked the graduates to “…help sustain each other and the campus in order to ensure that the promise that is Berkeley remains a reality for future generations to come.” This is a message that they obviously took to heart! We congratulate the Class of 2016 on setting the bar so high, and believe that subsequent classes will follow in their footsteps in making Berkeley a philanthropic priority for life.
Give NOW and Kickstart Your Summer - LAST DAY to Join Your Fellow Parent Donors!
TODAY, June 30, is the last day of the fiscal year! if you haven’t made a gift yet, please join 3,200 other Berkeley families in making a donation to the Cal Parents Fund, or to another area of campus. Each and every gift brings sunshine to Cal, regardless of size. If you’ve witnessed meaningful growth in your student this year, please donate now. Once you’ve made your gift, you can kick back this summer knowing that your student will be returning to a brighter place. If you are a proud parent of a 2016 graduate who recently contributed to the Senior Class gift, consider strengthening your family bond to Berkeley by making a gift to match your student’s. A huge wave of thanks to all the families who have already warmly given this year!
Ambassador Parents Answer CalSO Call
Cal Parents Ambassadors Ling Willis, Renu Bhatia and Diana Nhuch
Large and lively groups of incoming freshmen and their parents have descended on campus since the beginning of June for non-stop Cal Student Orientation (CalSO) activities, led by an impressive group of student leaders. So far this summer, we’ve had nine Ambassadors volunteer their evenings to serve on the Parents Panels where they have shared their student’s first-year experiences and answered questions ranging from bedding needs to monthly budgets. Here are some of their words of wisdom and practical tips:
“In the first semester if you get a call from your student upset about something, just listen to them, but don’t try to solve the problem for them, refer them to resources on campus. Cal has wonderful resources available.” Christine MacDonald
“Chill, they’re going to be fine. You cannot imagine what they’ll be like in a year.” “Don’t worry about sophomore year (housing)…by then, they will tell you what needs to be done.” Diana Nhuch
“Bring a formal suit (in case your student joins a business club)” Renu Bhatia
“If your child is interested in joining the Greek system (fraternities/sororities), be open to it. My daughter is with a group of strong, independent women and learning valuable organizational and life skills through the Greek system.” Dawn Billman
A big round of applause to those who have stepped on stage this month (some on multiple occasions): Christine MacDonald; Dan and Rhita Williams; Diana Nhuch; Ling Willis; Renu Bhatia; Carol Davis; Ally Watts; and Dawn Billman for sharing their personal stories and reassuring new parents that their students will indeed be in good hands.
It is not too late to register for CalSO. If you are an incoming parent and interested in attending one of the remaining sessions: 6/30 – 7/1, 7/7 - 7/8, 7/11 - 712, 7/14 - 7/15, and 8/19, you can contact New Student Services or call 510.642.7733.
Global Family Program Launched - Bay Area Families Needed!
Do you want to teach an international Cal student more about American culture beyond campus life, or want to learn about another culture in a personal and engaging way? The Berkeley International Office has launched a new Global Family Program (GFP) to connect international students with local Cal families (of students, alumni, faculty or staff). Each family will be assigned one or two international students, and should commit to getting together for at least one time during the Fall semester (only one semester commitment). Shared activities may include: informal family meals; holiday celebrations; day outings; or other activities particular to your own family. If interested, please apply now as spots are limited. Deadline is August 15th, 2016. If you have questions or difficulties completing the online application, please contact Sophie Xu.
