Cal Parents Volunteer Newsletter
July 2016

Greetings from the Cal Parents Office!

Summer is in full swing and a new academic year is rapidly approaching. But before that is upon us, here at Cal Parents we wanted to take a moment and stop to thank you for making this past year a success!

Thank you for the hundreds of hours you volunteered of your time. Thank you for your generous financial support. Thank you for sharing your passion and dedication, demonstrating through your hard work and philanthropy, your commitment to Berkeley’s excellence. Through your actions, you embody the motto atop the bright light of the Campanile, Fiat Lux, Let There Be Light, you shine light on Berkeley.

We would also like to welcome the 45 new Berkeley families who have signed up since June to be Cal Parents Ambassadors, and are receiving this e-newsletter for the very first time! We enjoyed meeting many of you at CalSO and are so gratified to have such a proactive group of parents be part of the campus community.  You will be joining your fellow Cal Parent Ambassadors to undoubtedly make the light shine brighter on Berkeley.

Move-In Weekend August 20 and 21 - Volunteers Needed!

Volunteers are needed for AM and PM shifts each of the two days.  Please use sign-up sheet to indicate which shift is best for you.

Message from the Fall Calling Campaign Co-Captains - Volunteers Needed!

Hello Fellow Cal Parents,

Every year during the Parent Calling Campaign, a terrific group of parents step up to call fellow Cal parents to connect our parent community, answers questions, and ask for philanthropic support to maintain Berkeley’s excellence. We’re hoping you’ll consider joining us this fall in this annual event by making a few calls and sharing your passion and dedication for Berkeley.

Your unique parent perspective and volunteer role is a critical part of our success in raising funds to maintain the University’s excellence. Please join us in the Parent’s Calling Campaign. It’s both fun and rewarding, and we will prepare you with plenty of material including a getting started guide with a sample script and some commonly asked questions, as well as being available for you to answer any questions or concerns!

We hope you will join us!  Sign up for 2016 Parents Calling Campaign!

Go Bears!

CalSO Volunteers Make Big Splash this Summer

Renu Bhatia, Carol and Pepe Davis

Many thanks to Carol and Pepe Davis, Milan Kaur, Christine MacDonald, and Diana Nhuch for participating in the three Cal Student Orientation (CalSO) panels in July.  Over the course of ten nights this summer, we had 11 ambassadors dispense valuable advice and helpful tips to 1,000 appreciative new parents.  A huge thank you and loud round of applause to all our volunteers who donated a combined total of 72 hours towards CalSO.  Special thanks to volunteer standout and mother of two Cal students, Christine MacDonald, who came to campus on six separate occasions to share her wisdom and wealth of knowledge with incoming parents.

There will be a final make-up orientation on August 19, immediately prior to move-in. You may register here, or if you have questions, you can contact New Student Services or call 510.642.7733.

Final Move-In Tips from CalSO Speakers

Berkeley’s Housing website is an excellent resource and has a recommended list of what to pack, but in addition to this list, our veteran parents have also suggested the following:

  • Fan (in case room faces the sun most of the day)
  • Throw blanket (easy for roommate to throw on top your student if s/he falls asleep on the bed)
  • Big pillow for leaning on while student does his/her homework on the bed
  • Mattress anti bed-bug cover

It is also helpful to have two family members accompany your student for the move-in.  This way, a driver can stay with the car while your student stands in line to get the room key, and a third person can start to unload.

Still unsure about move-in and what to bring, or not to bring? Feel free to reach out to CalSO volunteer and SF Bay Area parent of a rising sophomore, Diana Nhuch, directly.  She has graciously offered to serve as a peer resource to you. Thank you Diana for going the extra mile to provide advice to our newest members of the Cal parent family! Email Diana now.

Global Family Program - Bay Area Families Still Needed!

Last month, we informed you that the Berkeley International Office launched a new Global Family Program (GFP) to connect international students with local Cal families (of students, alumni, faculty or staff).  Since then, three Bay Area families have signed up and we are looking for more local families to spend time during the fall semester with our international students.  If interested, please apply before the August 15 deadline to be automatically considered.  Any questions or difficulties completing the online application, please contact Sophie Xu.
