Greetings from the Cal Parents Office!
We have much to celebrate this month! Cal athletes brought home 21 medals from Rio, Berkeley was named the best public university in the world by the ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities), and the greatest cause for Golden Bear pride: the arrival of the class of 2020 to campus!
A BIG embrace to our new class of students and their parents. We met many of you at Cal Day when you visited as prospective families, and we are delighted that you have chosen to make Berkeley your home. We look forward to deepening our dialogue and developing a friendship during your student’s time at Cal. Click here for a sampling of responses from the class of 2020 in answer to the question, “Why did you choose Berkeley?”
Whether you are a new or returning parent, please download our newly created Cal Parents Resource Guide, which provides a comprehensive overview of Berkeley and its countless resources.

Ambassador Training & Volunteer Reception at Parents Weekend!
Please join us on campus, Friday, September 30, for an overview of the Cal Parents Ambassador program, during Parents Weekend at Homecoming. Hear from campus representatives, deepen your knowledge of Cal and connect with fellow ambassadors (from 3-4pm at the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, 190 Doe Library). Following the training we will hold a reception/social hour on the Doe Library steps (from 4-5pm, preceding the Homecoming Parents Dinner) to thank our parent volunteer community for your great work on behalf of Cal. We hope to see you! Please RSVP.
Remember also to register for Parents Weekend at Homecoming. Make your travel plans now, as hotels do fill up and rates increase.
Lightening the Load During Move-In Weekend
New residents of Unit 1 were greeted by the Aravind Family Ashwin '13, Akila, Baland and Aishwarya '18
Armed with Cal Parents Resource Guides, campus maps, residence hall knowledge and answers to questions ranging from where to get a CalNet ID card to how to register a bike, Cal Parents ambassadors and staff greeted many of the 7,200 new fall freshmen, transfers, and their families during Move-In Weekend. Thank you to our devoted volunteers for staffing informational tables outside the residence halls and at Sproul Plaza: Akila and Baland Aravind, Ally Watts, Andrew Jensen, Chris MacDonald, Dan and Rhita Williams, David Lieu, Dawn Billman, Jonathan Zhang, Milan Kaur, Nancy Hughes, and Yvonne Chen. This year’s cohort included a parent from Boston, a couple accompanied by their alumnus son and upperclassman daughter, and two incoming parents who moved in their students in the morning then helped at their students’ respective dorms in the afternoon. If you would like to join these ambassadors next year for Move-In Weekend, please contact Rose Hsu. Go Bears!
Welcome Calls to 500 Incoming Families - Ambassadors Hit it Out of the Park!
A record number of families received welcome calls in August, thanks to a stellar group of 55 Cal Parents Board members and Ambassadors, whose enthusiasm helped us more than double the number of families reached last year. We were pleased to hear anecdotal stories of volunteers being asked to contact neighbors and friends! Additionally, for the first time, we reached out to families whose primary language is not English. Led by Diana Nhuch, who made calls in three different languages, our talented group of multilingual volunteers contacted families in Cantonese, French, Hebrew, Mandarin and Spanish! THANK YOU TO ALL 55 ambassadors who so warmly welcomed the newest members of our Cal Parent community. A special shout out to Tamara Bland and Gloria Hayat for making the largest number of calls, and to our first-time volunteers, new to campus and Cal Parents Ambassadors: Martha Galvan (Spanish); Ming Zhou (Mandarin); Jonathan Zhang (Mandarin); and Melisse Mossy (English). Thanks for being such wonderful additions to our parent community already!
Help Needed for Fall Calling Campaign - Sign Up Now!
Last year, Berkeley received donations totaling a record-breaking $479.1 million from the largest number of alumni, parents and friends in its history. Parents contributed $17.5 million, with nearly $3 million directed to annual funds which address campus’ most pressing needs and directly enhance our students’ experience. Thank YOU!
Philanthropy is key to Berkeley’s success and mission, and gifts of all sizes matter. We invite you to participate this year and help grow Cal’s success by making a gift yourself AND by joining Cal’s annual peer-to-peer parent fundraising campaign which launches September 23. Over an eight-week period, you will be asked to contact fellow families, share your knowledge and passion for Berkeley, and express the importance of philanthropic support for our university.
Cal Parents staff will provide support, training and materials throughout the campaign, and you will be guided and cheered by two amazing, experienced volunteer co-captains: Cal Parents Board member Gloria Hayat and Cal Parents Ambassador Mimi Sardou. Gloria has volunteered for multiple campaigns and served as co-captain last year. Thank you, Gloria!!
Please read on for a personal letter from our newest co-captain, Cal Parent Ambassador (and Cal alumna) Mimi Sardou:
This is Bear Territory!
Hi, I’m Mimi Sardou, and excited to be the co-captain of the Parent Calling Campaign with Gloria!
First and foremost, I am the proud parent of current Junior and BioEngineering student, Sarah, who is finding more things to learn and experience at Berkeley than time would ever allow! The best part about Berkeley for her are the people she’s met - fellow students and professors. I am also a proud Golden Bear, graduating with degrees in Microbiology/Immunology & Economics. Both of my siblings hold degrees from Berkeley, and my grandparents also graduated from Cal in the 1920s (and my grandfather was even on the football team!)
Currently, I am working for a startup company, URise Products, bringing innovative mobility devices to market.
I am excited to be involved with the Parent Calling Campaign because while Berkeley is the #1 public institution in the world, the “public” part means that funding is dependent on many sources, and donations are vital to staying at the top! I hope you will join our team for an important & worthwhile cause! With many volunteers, the work will be easy and fun!
I look forward to meeting you at Parent’s Weekend - September 30 - October 2!

Family Spotlight - The Cecchettos from San Diego
Jenny, Carlo and Amelia Cecchetto
“Amelia is doing great! I keep trying to be sad but she's making it really hard! She's so happy.. actually downright giddy to be there. I get a lot of "This is awesome!!!!" texts. So that makes this transition a lot easier on me.”
This heart-warming note came this week from San Diego parent Jenny Ceccheto about her freshman daughter, Amelia. A photo of the two of them was taken by a professional photographer on Cal Day in April, and has been featured widely on campus, including on the back cover of our own Parents Resource Guide. When they came to the Cal Parents table to introduce themselves during Move-In, we simply had to take another photo of them! If you have a Cal story and photo to share, we’d love to hear from you throughout the year. Submit your stories of Cal pride and joy here.
Incoming Class Profile and Looking Ahead to 2017
In total, 9,400 new students (6,400 freshmen and 3,000 transferring from other institutions) were admitted for 2016-17. Cal admitted 3% more in-state residents this year. Half of the admits are from Southern California, and more than a third are from the Bay Area. More on the Class of 2020.
Interested in helping to recruit next year’s incoming class by representing Cal at regional college fairs close to your home? Sponsored by the Cal Alumni Association (CAA), in collaboration with the Office of Undergraduate Admission, the College Fair Alumni Ambassadors Program enables you to meet prospective students, tell parents about your Cal experience, and answer their questions about applying to Berkeley. If you missed the August training dates, contact firstname.lastname@example.org to explore other training options for you. Once you have completed the required training, you will be able to sign up for college fairs that suit your schedule and location.
