Greetings from the Cal Parents Office
It was fabulous to see so many of you among the 1,300 Cal families attending Parents Weekend. The campus was electrified by your presence and exuberance! Read on for a recap of the weekend, links to resources shared during the Cal Parents Ambassador training, and information about a special volunteer opportunity to assist at the UC Berkeley Food Pantry.
Parents Weekend - Blue and Gold Highlights
Thank you to Ambassador Stacie Charbonneau Hess for sharing her family’s experience of the weekend with daughter, Madeleine Gregory ‘20. Stories like this make what we do worthwhile! Please keep your Cal stories and photos coming.
“...It was our first Parents’ Weekend at Cal and it was memorable, fun and energizing! We feel so good knowing Madeleine is in good hands…. We had SUCH a wonderful time! Our family flew in from Massachusetts Thursday, attended the wonderful dinner Friday night (complete with marching band and good company at our table!), hiked on Saturday, and enjoyed some quality time with our freshman before heading out Sunday morning. Madeleine is loving her Suite Mates at Clark Kerr. She is in the FPF program in San Francisco, and is fully engaged in life at Cal. We could not be more thrilled.”
We were delighted to celebrate longtime volunteers and former Cal Parents Board members, Shawn Christianson and Philip McLeod, parents of two Cal grads, Spencer ‘12 and Connor ’16, as they accepted the Spirit of 1868 Volunteer Award from the Cal Alumni Association for their years of philanthropic and volunteer leadership. Congratulations, Shawn and Philip!
Perhaps the greatest cheerleader on campus over the weekend was Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students, Joseph Greenwell, who sent this message to attendees of the Volunteer Reception and wanted us to share with our ambassador community.
Dear wonderful Cal Parents,
Wow! It was so amazing to have the opportunity to meet you at Homecoming Parents Weekend. I enjoyed speaking with several of you at the reception and must apologize that I was not able to connect with each of you individually. Your thoughtful questions and comments inspire and energize me, and reconfirm how much I enjoy the privilege of serving UC Berkeley.
I do hope we will stay connected as we are one Berkeley family. Please feel free to connect with me on any of my social media outlets Twitter | Instagram | Facebook | Web | LinkedIn.
Thank you again for everything that you do for Cal and helping me and so many others to continue to enhance the Berkeley Student Life experience.
Take care and have a Caltastic day,
Joseph Defraine Greenwell
Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students
Ambassadors Come Together for Volunteer Training
Kudos to the 55 new and returning ambassadors who attended our training at Doe Library during Parents Weekend. The participant survey results indicate that you enjoyed meeting your fellow volunteers and learning about opportunities for involvement, and thought that the topics covered by our campus speakers--Admissions and Career Services--were relevant and helpful to your role as an ambassador in your community. If you haven’t replied to the survey yet, please do so by clicking here.
Weren’t able to attend the training or are brand new to the Cal Parents Ambassador Program and want to see what you missed? The Ambassador Training information is now available online, and a full listing of volunteer opportunities can be found in the Ambassador Handbook. The training presentation includes slides on admissions and enrollment data to help you answer commonly-asked questions and details Career Center resources that you’ll want to share with your own student.
Parent Philanthropy & Volunteerism Off to a Strong Start
Thank you for answering our call to action! Since August, some 77 Cal Parents Ambassadors and Board members have contributed 600 hours of volunteer time—making welcome calls to incoming families, assisting and engaging parents during Move-In Weekend, and representing Berkeley at regional college fairs for prospective students and their parents in the San Francisco Bay and Los Angeles areas. The warm, personal touch you provide to new and prospective Berkeley families is invaluable. Thank you.
Philanthropically, parent support of Cal’s annual funds is up by 20% in the first fiscal quarter of 2016-17, with 33% more families contributing this year over last. The Parents Fund and other unrestricted campus funds provide critical, flexible dollars where most needed to support undergraduate programs and our outstanding faculty. To join other families in this commitment to Berkeley’s excellence, please make a gift today. Way to go and THANK YOU, Ambassadors!!
The Berkeley Effect: Give to Berkeley and Change the World
The butterfly effect explains change. The Berkeley Effect changes the world. During Big Give—our annual one-day fundraising blitz on November 17—you can be that change. From the smallest gift to the biggest, your generosity to Cal holds truly transformative power.
As the date approaches, we will be in touch with ideas for how you can help promote Big Give to your networks and how to participate in contests to support your favorite schools, colleges, student programs and campus initiatives. More to come.
Fall Calling Campaign – Gloria Hayat Spotlight
The Fall Calling Campaign, currently underway and culminating with Big Give, is led by two standout volunteers. In our last newsletter, we profiled Mimi Sardou, the co-captain from the Bay Area. This month, we introduce her counterpart from Los Angeles, Gloria C. Hayat, who is co-chairing her third Cal Parents Calling Campaign! THANK YOU, GLORIA!
Gloria was born and raised in Connecticut. A graduate of Fairfield University, she currently resides in Southern California with her husband Gershon and two dogs “Lady” and “Blue.” Daughter Ariel is a rising senior majoring in Psychology with a minor in Theatre. Gloria first became involved with the Cal Parents Board in the fall of 2013 and has been going strong ever since, supporting virtually all Cal Parents Ambassador activities: Regents & Chancellor’s Scholar Interviews; Cal Day; Private High School Receptions; Newly Admitted Student Receptions; Welcome Receptions for incoming parents and students; and calling campaigns.
To volunteer or inquire about this peer-to-peer calling campaign, please contact Colleen Cahill.
