Cal Athletics is coming off a year in which the Golden Bears captured the NCAA national team title in men’s swimming & diving and added 11 more individual or event national championships in the sports of men’s and women’s swimming, men’s rowing and women’s track & field in 2018-19.
This marks the 46th consecutive year Cal has captured at least one team or individual national title.
In its history, the Bears are closing in on 100 team championships, having claimed 97 in 16 different sports.
The Cal baseball team had a pair of baseball student-athletes drafted in the first round of the Major League Draft in June, including first baseman Andrew Vaughn, who was selected third overall by the Chicago White Sox. He is the highest draft pick in school history. Catcher Korey Lee was chosen later in the first round by the Houston Astros.
In women’s basketball, Kristine Anigwe ‚— the 2019 National Defensive Player of the Year — went to the Connecticut Sun with the ninth overall selection in the WNBA Draft in April.
A number of Bears will be competing this summer on national teams, including four in the Women’s World Cup, taking place this summer in France.
They are:: Alex Morgan,one of the primary scorers for the United States, Betsy Hassett (New Zealand), Daisy Cleverley (New Zealand) and Miranda Nild (Thailand).
Later this summer, look for a host of current and former Golden Bears at the FINA World Swimming Championships in South Korea, including U.S. team members Nathan Adrian, Kathleen Baker, Katie McLaughlin, Ryan Murphy, Jacob Pebley, Josh Prenot, Andrew Seliskar and Abbey Weitzeil.
Other Cal athletes will be competing at such events at the World University Games in Naples, Italy, and the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
Looking ahead to the fall, Cal’s football team returns after earning a bowl bid last season and will feature one of the top defensive units in the country.
The Bears open the season at home at California Memorial Stadium with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff vs. UC Davis on August 31. Other home games include: North Texas Sept. 14, Arizona State Sept. 27 (Friday), Oregon State Oct. 19 (Homecoming), Washington State Nov. 9 and USC Nov. 16.
