Greetings and Gratitude from the Cal Parents Office

Cal Parents Newsletter April/May 2017_8

Congratulations to the parents of the graduating class of 2017! We look forward to celebrating our newest Cal grads at spring commencement this Saturday. And, we extend a huge thank you to all parents who have helped during a very busy semester. You have represented Berkeley with incoming families at receptions across the country, welcomed guests at Cal Day, and are staffing the campus Food Pantry during the final weeks of the semester. Bravo!

Give to Berkeley. Change the world.
Cal Parents make a difference. You have proven this through your generous volunteerism and participation as ambassadors. If you’ve not yet made a gift to Berkeley this year, please join the thousands of Cal families who have contributed more than $12 million so far this year. Together, parents like you make Berkeley a place of inspiration, opportunity and promise.

When you give to Berkeley at any level, you are part of something bigger — a community of supporters committed to Cal’s access and excellence. With the State of California providing a fraction of the support it once granted, private support is integral to Cal’s success. Thank you!

What can we change #InThisGen?Cal Parents Newsletter April/May 2017_2
At Berkeley, we’re looking ahead and asking ourselves a simple question: what can we change in a single generation? From health to water, food systems to climate, energy to economic equality — our research and advocacy projects aim to radically improve life for everyone in this generation. Visit to learn more about what we’re doing to make our world a better place.

Welcome Calls to New Cal Families - Volunteers Needed!
Share your love and firsthand knowledge of Berkeley with parents of the Class of 2021 by making personal calls to incoming families between July 24 - August 7. If you speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, or Korean please let us know, as these are the top four non-English languages spoken by families of our incoming class. Learn more and sign up here.

Golden Bear Orientation for New Cal Families
Incoming Fall 2017 students will participate in a week-long Golden Bear Orientation (GBO) in August before the semester begins. During Move-In on Sunday, August 13 and Monday, August 14, Cal will host orientation sessions for parents of incoming students. We hope you'll join us to welcome and inform new families! Stay tuned for sign-up information this summer. Dates and times for the parent GBO sessions are: Sunday, August 13, 3:00 p.m.; Monday, August 14, 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.

If you would like to serve on a panel at a GBO session and share your experience with incoming parents and their students, please contact Rose Hsu. Some typical questions posed by new parents: "What's one thing you wished you had known?" "Do I have to come help my child find housing?" "Is Cal as competitive as its reputation?"

Overnight Stay Program Panelists - Thank You!

Cal Parents Newsletter April/May 2017_4Thank you to our stand-out panelists (many of whom are also alumni) Carol and Pepe Davis, Milan Kuar, Naomi Makihara, David Pingitore, Mimi Sardou, Randy Shingai, and Rick Quon for participating in candid discussions with 300 prospective parents last month as part of the Overnight Stay Program (OSP) sponsored by the Cal Alumni Student Association (CASA).
