Largest gift in Berkeley Haas history will transform undergraduate business program

On July 19, 2022, the Haas School of Business announced that its top-ranked two-year undergraduate business program will expand to become a four-year program, supported by the largest single gift in the school’s history. In recognition of the $30 million gift from Haas alumnus Warren “Ned” Spieker ’66, and his wife, Carol ’66 (political science), UC Berkeley will name the program the Spieker Undergraduate Business Program. The first four-year cohort of students will enroll in August of 2024.

I was lucky to get accepted as an undergrad at UC Berkeley in the 1980’s, only to waste that chance by choosing an east coast competitor that offered snow. However, it turns out that snow, as a feature of the iconic undergraduate experience, is vastly overrated! This summer, when offered another chance to be at Berkeley, I wisely took it. In my new position as director of Parent and Family Philanthropy, I’ve had the opportunity to help parents and families participate in the Berkeley experience, and I haven’t looked back since.

Chancellor Christ noted that Berkeley has raised $5.9 billion in philanthropic support toward the campaign goal with a year and a half to go and looks forward to announcing additional significant gifts in the coming months.
