The Yardi Scholarship Program: Bringing technology to the service of democracy
Created with a generous gift from software engineer and founder of Yardi Systems Anant Yardi ’69, the Yardi Scholarship Program encourages top-tier Berkeley students — particularly those who are the first in their families to attend college, including transfer students — to cultivate an interest in leveraging technology to advance democratic principles.

The self-guided Black history tour at UC Berkeley begins at Memorial Stadium, where student Walter Gordon was a star of the football team more than 100 years ago. It then weaves through campus, making stops at 13 more locations, each highlighting an important person or landmark related to Black history.
Developed over the course of more than five years of extensive planning, public engagement, and rigorous environmental review, UC Berkeley's plans for People's Park incorporate four fundamental objectives.
The project also reflects the university's long-standing efforts to support those in need and its commitment to providing better solutions for unhoused people than sleeping outdoors in unsafe and unsanitary conditions...

With so much brilliance at UC Berkeley — from headline-grabbing research to stellar faculty members across disciplines — it’s impossible for undergraduates, many scouting for their academic passions, to sample it all while on campus.
UC Berkeley began work early Thursday morning to close the People’s Park construction site, where it will build housing for students and for unhoused people, pending resolution by the California Supreme Court of legal challenges. It also plans to preserve more than 60% of the 2.8-acre site, revitalizing open park space that also reinforces the park’s history.
Some 1,000 students participated in Saturday’s event; Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna was the keynote speaker.
Jade Amor-Shannan Johnson and Cerenity Bush stood under the bright winter sun on Saturday, proudly waiting to process into UC Berkeley’s Haas Pavilion and wearing personalized caps bedecked in glitter, illustrations and motivating phrases.
Johnson’s cap said, “The marathon continues,” and Bush’s quoted Maya Angelou: “Success is loving life and daring to live it.”
The year 2023 was a year of innovation and major change at UC Berkeley. From emerging work on artificial intelligence to the announcement of Chancellor Carol Christ’s upcoming retirement to a flurry of new construction on campus, Berkeley faced and embraced the future.
For the first time, the campus is using mass timber — a lighter, safer and more energy-efficient alternative to traditional concrete and steel construction — in construction.
The Dwinelle Annex will undergo interior and exterior architectural updates to make it accessible for DSP’s diverse community of students.
For the first time in its over 50-year history, UC Berkeley’s Disabled Students’ Program (DSP) will have its own building, a campus investment that will centralize DSP staff and services, expand its facilities and make them more accessible, and improve support for the program’s community of 5,000 students.
Some 60 languages are taught on campus, and revitalizing and preserving endangered languages is a priority.
At least 60 languages — from Mongolian and Old Norse to Polish, Catalan, Ancient Egyptian, Arabic and Biblical Hebrew — are taught at UC Berkeley, one of the nation’s top institutions for the breadth and depth of its world languages program. A growing emphasis also is being placed at Berkeley on revitalizing and preserving endangered languages, most of them spoken by Indigenous peoples.

UC Berkeley is the No. 1 U.S. public university, the sixth-best among public and private universities nationally and the world’s ninth-best university overall, according to the Times Higher Education’s 2024 World University Rankings, released today (Sept. 27, 2023).
The Times Higher Ed World University Rankings evaluated more than 1,900 universities across 99 countries and territories.
