UC Berkeley has once again topped out many of the categories in the latest round of graduate program rankings, released late Monday by U.S. News & World Report.

Thousands of admitted students and their families flooded UC Berkeley’s walkways, plazas and lecture halls Saturday as Berkeley brought attendees back to campus for the first fully in-person Cal Day since the beginning of the pandemic.

Prospective students navigated over 200 events on campus which included Chancellor Carol Christ’s signature morning welcome at California Memorial Stadium and a noon rally at Upper Sproul Plaza where future and current students enjoyed traditional spirit songs.

As a high school student in 2019, Jimmy Nguyen wasn’t sure which college he wanted to attend. A senior at Yerba Buena High School in San Jose, he’d been accepted to several universities. And while UC Berkeley was on his radar, he felt it was a little too close to home.

But that spring, when Nguyen went to Cal Day, Berkeley’s annual open house, he said he was able to envision himself as a part of its bustling campus community — he knew it was the place for him.

MINNEAPOLIS – In a testament to its depth and talent, the California men's swimming & diving team had multiple athletes score multiple points as the Golden Bears secured the program's eighth national championship on Saturday evening at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatica Center. Cal finished the meet with 482 points with one individual champion - sophomore Destin Lasco in the 200-yard backstroke.

These adjectives and more were used to recommend five UC Berkeley instructors who are this year’s recipients of the Distinguished Teaching Award, the campus’s most prestigious honor for teaching. The award, first given in 1957, recognizes teaching that incites intellectual curiosity, engages students in learning and has a lifelong impact.

February is Black History Month. It’s a time for us to call attention to and pay tribute to the far-reaching sacrifices and triumphs of Black people and communities. It is also an invitation to think about how we uplift the culture, creativity, and leadership of Black life today while holding space for Black dreams and futures. Nationally, the 2023 theme for the month is “Black Resistance,” inviting us to reflect on the roles, responsibilities, and opportunities we all have as individuals to advance racial and social justice across campus.

Students looking for the right major to become global citizens in today’s world are increasingly turning to the arts and humanities at Berkeley.

The Cal Dining team enjoyed bringing both flavor and fun to students last Fall.

Highlights included:

Plant Forward Recipe Challenge
Students were invited to taste and rate the chefs’ dish creations, which had to include sunchokes, mushrooms and broccoli rabe.

We are approaching the busiest time of the year for Cal Athletics, when the winter sports season collides with the beginning of spring sports. By the end of February, nineteen of our sports will be competing simultaneously.

Faculty who illuminate understanding in young minds. New friendships whose light will shine through a lifetime. A public service mission that brightens the world. What’s your Berkeley star? From the star in Sather Gate to the ones explored by the James Webb telescope, the Berkeley galaxy is a brilliant one full of innovation, empathy and generosity.

Miaad and Albert Bushala have always given their all when it comes to supporting their children’s education. The couple from Orange County, Calif, were active parents at the arts high school their two kids attended, and that desire to make a difference has extended to their children’s college experiences, including that of their daughter at UC Berkeley.
