The 2022-23 season is underway for Cal’s fall sports, with the winter sports already gearing up for the start of their schedules.

Chancellor Christ noted that Berkeley has raised $5.9 billion in philanthropic support toward the campaign goal with a year and a half to go and looks forward to announcing additional significant gifts in the coming months. An anonymous donor contributed $252 million in 2020 — the second largest gift in the university’s history — to seed construction for the Gateway, which is slated to open during the 2025−26 academic year.

Carolyn Bertozzi, a professor at Stanford University who today shared the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, spent her formative and most creative years at UC Berkeley.

Light the Way Campaign

On July 19, 2022, the Haas School of Business announced that its top-ranked two-year undergraduate business program will expand to become a four-year program, supported by the largest single gift in the school’s history. In recognition of the $30 million gift from Haas alumnus Warren “Ned” Spieker ’66, and his wife, Carol ’66 (political science), UC Berkeley will name the program the Spieker Undergraduate Business Program. The first four-year cohort of students will enroll in August of 2024.

Now that Latinx Heritage Month has arrived, I’ve realized that this is my second year at Berkeley (a little late for the realization, I know).

I was lucky to get accepted as an undergrad at UC Berkeley in the 1980’s, only to waste that chance by choosing an east coast competitor that offered snow. However, it turns out that snow, as a feature of the iconic undergraduate experience, is vastly overrated! This summer, when offered another chance to be at Berkeley, I wisely took it. In my new position as director of Parent and Family Philanthropy, I’ve had the opportunity to help parents and families participate in the Berkeley experience, and I haven’t looked back since.
